In León and Palencia there are vast expanses of protected territory where brown bear, chamois and Iberian wolf live at ease in mountains which rise to 2500 metres in height, a natural boundary with Picos de Europa between Castilla y León, Asturias and Santander.

Water forms an important element in these provinces, crossed as they are by important rivers such as the Órgigo, the Esla, the Pisuerga and the Carrión, which are historically linked with the Castilla Channel. Moreover, some of the largest reservoirs are to be found here: Riaño, Barrios de Luna, Porma or Aguilar.

The province of Palencia is characterised by the wide wanging contrasts of its landscapes throughout its territory. As the well known Palencia's anthem says: "We've got meadows, valleys, plains and mountains".

The province of León boasts two great pathways: one running from south to north, the so called since the Roman era the 'Silver Way', and the other going from east to west, the old polgrims way to Santiago.
